To throw one’s hat in the ring
To issue a challenge; to proclaim one’s candidacy
Remember those times when at school, work or elsewhere a volunteer has been needed, someone to step forward and to take on the project and get it done. There would have been times when you did not volunteer because the task repelled in some way, and there would have been those times when what would be need from you would be either something you had little experience of and/or which was outside of your comfort zone.
What might of happened had you stepped forward back then! Would you of impressed the boss who would of seen you team playing by taking on the rough. Would others of seen you as someone with courage, someone who will take on new challenges in order to get a task done. Would you today be in a better role and position than you are in now?
So next time a volunteer is needed here are a few questions to bear in mind before deciding whether or not to throw you hat in to that ring.
- 1) What’s the cost to you of volunteering (and not)?
- 2) What’s the potential benefit to you in the long term of stepping in?
- 3) What’s stopping you from volunteering? And how can these things be overcome.
